A Special Statement from Bryan and Sarah Hunter, of Heirloom Greens & Gardens:
To our valued customers, friends and family,
It is with great sadness that we announce that Heirloom Greens& Gardens will be closing its doors for the last time at the end of this summer. For more details of the store closure, sales and product availabilities, please visit our Facebook page and website, as we will keep them up to date. For now, we have a special message for our customers, staff, family and friends who have supported us over the years.
When we started the journey of opening a garden centre in 2012, we were of course excited and a little nervous. It was a huge undertaking for an engaged couple of 20-somethings, but with the help and support of so many friends, and especially our incredible families, we were able to get our dream off the ground. It’s no secret that running a business is a lot of work, but we took our best run at it for 5 seasons.
As sad as we are to have to close, we don’t consider this a failure. We consider this a chapter in our lives that is closing, and now it’s on to the next one. Now it’s time to move on to bigger and better things. Of course, in some ways we are heartbroken that it has come to this, but we are truly looking forward to a bright future ahead, and wherever life may lead us. On a more personal note, this journey has been filled with so many wonderful people, and we would be doing a disservice to these people if we didn’t take a moment to tell you how much we appreciate your help and support over the years. So please, indulge me (Bryan) in one last long winded essay – I’m going to miss writing these!
To our friends and families:
I can honestly say that your support never wavered in the 5 seasons we’ve been open. Countless hours of volunteering from our friends and family to water plants, paint shelves, scrub dirty planters, unload trucks, and even run the cash register. We absolutely never would’ve gotten this far without you and we are truly grateful. I think many of our customers got to know Alf, Rita, Jim or Gerda by name since they were practically honorary employees, they worked as hard as our paid employees in the heat and the cold just to help their kids, and it all came from the bottom of their enormous hearts.
All the names and faces of our many friends who have helped us over the years are scrolling through our memories and there are far too many to name here, but we hope you know who you are. Friends who lent their time, support, skills, equipment, advice and referrals, your kindness will not be forgotten and we hope we can repay you someday. I can’t count the number of times friends both old and new would walk in to buy a shrub or hanging basket – sometimes driving clear across the city just because they wanted to support us. It means so much to us. We love when we see that you’ve shared our Facebook posts or blogs. These small kindnesses fill our hearts with gratitude and we love you all.
To our employees, both current and former:
We thank you for everything you’ve done to help make the past 5 seasons the adventure that it was. When we hire our staff, we look for that special something in their personalities that fits with the model of our business – that is, helpful service with a smile. Through rain, shine, 40*C humidity, or -20*C blizzard, you always showed up to work willing to provide our customers with a great experience. You made us feel comfortable when we left the store, knowing our store was in good hands. You worked hard through some of the worst heat waves (July 2013, I’m looking at you) and worst winters (2013, I’m still looking at you) without complaint and for that, we thank you all.
Though all of our staff have been amazing, we would like to especially thank some of the key members who helped make our dream possible from day one; Melissa, Bonnie, Madi, Nicola, Julie and Carter were instrumental in helping to alleviate some of the stresses of running a small business. Trustworthy employees are a manager’s best asset, and we always knew that we could trust you. We can’t say enough about the staff we’ve had over the years, you took care of the plants, you took care of the store and at times you even took care of our Winnie! You made it possible for a husband and wife to take an evening or weekend away from the store while knowing that we didn’t have to worry. You made it possible for me (Bryan) to feel confident in starting on a new career path, while my wife ran the day-to-day at the store. You kept us sane, you kept your chins up and worked hard even during terrible weather, and not least of all, you became our friends. Your efforts were incredible, and we can’t thank you enough.
To anyone we didn’t name - our part time or casual employees – you’re not forgotten about, you all played a role in the success that we had and it was such a joy to work with all of you.
And finally, to our loyal customers:
We could easily have mentioned you among our “friends” as so many of you have become our friends over the years. I love when I get a text from a customer with a question, or just a photo showing off your new landscapes. We love the emails, comments on Facebook and private messages. I don’t want to single out any particular customers, because each and every one of you is appreciated - but let’s just say there are a few notables who “know who they are” who have gone over and above to support our business over the years. We know that in general supporting a small business means spending a bit more than you might at a big box store, so we truly thank you for shopping with us and spending your hard earned dollars with a family business. On that note, we hope you will continue to do so in the future at our great local garden centres, it’s a beautiful thing when families can help families. We will miss helping yours!
